Generally nothing more than a hyperlink from one web site to another.

In search machine optimization, a backlink is generally a link to or from a 'Link Partner' with the purpose of mutually increasing Link Popularity of the two sites.

Backlinks generally should be included using traditional HTML.

JavaScript generated links, in contrast, are generally difficult for web bots used by major search engines to process and therefore do not benefit search machine optimization.
