The Google™ search engine uses a system for ranking Web pages called page rank. It is simply a score awarded to every page based on it's link popularity (or, the number of links on other people's Web sites that direct users to your site). A high page rank has become the holy grail for online marketers who are trying to increase the page rank of their Web sites by any means possible. While there are a certain number of things you can do to assist in getting a higher page rank (most importantly having a lot of sites link back to you), understand that the page rank is based on an algorithm which is very complex.
Google™ and PageRank™ are copyrighted by Google Inc., Mountain View CA, USA. The PageRank™-Algorithm is protected under US Patent 6.285.999.
In short PageRank is a “vote”, by all the other pages on the Web, about how important a page is. A link to a page counts as a vote of support. If there’s no link there’s no support (but it’s an abstention from voting rather than a vote against the page).
The PR of each page depends on the PR of the pages pointing to it.
